AP - Top 5 Music Videos

Best Coast - When I'm With You
  • I find the narrative of this video really entertaining. It shows a young girl, the singer in the band, in a relationship with a clown, which gives the video an upbeat attitude and gives a freshness that could be simply recreated if we were to choose a similar narrative.
  • This video adheres to Andrew Goodwin's theory where lyrics relate to the visuals of the music video, for example, the lyrics 'When i'm with you I have fun' relates to the sandy beaches and the clown itself which has connotations of humour and having a good time.
  • As for techniques we could use in our video the props and locations as they are relatively accessible (beach, Burger King), however, the good weather is questionable.

Boy and Bear - Rabbit Song
  • This video is interesting, it has no meat shots as Boy and Bear do not take part in this video
  • In this video I find that the narrative suggests that sometimes we need to escape from our daily lives into a childlike world where we are free to dress how we like and play, for example in this video, a game similar to cowboy's and indians.
  • The costume plays a very important part in this music video. Instead of 'normal' clothes people are dressed up as animals or in the case of the protagonist his work ties.
  • The lighting is bright and the colouring warm which connotes happiness and comfort.
  • We also get the idea that the surrealism of this video is linked to a dreamlike state where he wakes up at the end of the video in his bed which is a common technique used in music videos.
  • Whether this would be a technique we would use for our track is something we may consider.

    Laura Marling - Rambling Man
    • The style of this video is very different to the others as the song is more solemn and slow paced but I think that it works really well with the low saturation of the video.
    • Some shots I would quite like to use in our music video would be the close-ups of little details such as hands playing the guitar and faces.
    • The lighting in this video is very atmospheric and connotes a sense of earthiness and reality as I find bright lighting makes things appear 'sugar coated'
    • However, this would be more difficult to recreate in a student video due to lack of facilities.

Blur - Parklife
  •  This video has exactly the kind of fun atmosphere that makes it have the repeatability factor.
  • It is bright, colourful and grabs your attention with it's youthful attitude i.e. anti-authoritarian which is common feature in music videos according to Andrew Goodwin.

Blink 182 - All The Small Things
